Infantry Continuity

By Military Police | January 23, 2010

The last couple days on the game have been something of a disaster. I apologize to the community for what’s being experienced, but Satori and I both find ourselves facing a problem wherein the issue is not a shortage of problem solving willpower, but rather a shortage of capacity. We’ve developed a proposal that’s being presented to management to see if the complication can be rectified through a few different routes.

One of these ideas is to place Infantry on the PS3 Network and make it a game that is purchased at a low price. The revenue from that should help get Infantry more programming support than what we currently have (i.e., zero). It is also reasonable to assume that our population would grow immensely if that were carried out. It is unknown at the moment if the PC and PS3 versions would be compatible, but that is ideal.

The other idea is to open up a donation bin and raise funds from our community to prioritize a patch that the game desperately requires. I know that many players have voiced that they’d be more than willing to pitch in if it meant no more hacking and server stability.

Another option is to get permission to allow a skilled programmer from our community to make a trip to SOE’s office and work on a patch. I know this might sound funny to some of you, but I have heard programmers in our community talking about their willingness to patch the game for free. Unfortunately, this work would have to be done locally, since SOE does not allow remote access to such privileged data.

Finally, there’s the remedy of Satori and/or myself being given remote access to reboot the system. That way, when we do have a crash and go into SAM, the game can be rebooted right away and thus reduce the damage done. This is clearly the least ideal resolution in this proposal, but it’s better than nothing.

Please keep in mind that what I’ve outlined are simply points in a proposal. All of this is tentative and I’m not sure if any of it will actually occur. I just wanted to let everyone know that Satori and I are very concerned about what’s happening and this is what we have right now in terms of attacking the issue. Thanks for being patient and hopefully we’ll see some positive change soon.

we need to discuss donations further seems to be the only way out of this , however come up with a plan for the money so some of it goes to advertising

Best bit out of that would be to send a developer from the community who can actually code and is willing to pay for his room and board while at SOE offices to recompile. It would be a lot easier to gather money for a plan ticket/ room and board for him. Question is he capable and how long will it take for him to do it on his own spare time.

    lol…infantry on the PS3

You’d have to pretty much rewrite the game from scratch to put this on the PS3. There is no way this would happen unless Infantry was popular and Sony thought they could make money off it by porting it to PS3. You can scratch this idea off the list.

Without some official method conducted by Sony I doubt any kind of donation system would get anything done. And it would probably take a huge amount of money that we probably couldn’t raise.

As far as getting a programmer from our community to fix this, I also can’t see this happening. Even if Sony would actually approve this, it would never work unless it was someone local to SOE’s office who could make regular trips. Chances are any needed work done will take a lot of time to get done. And after any big changes are done, there could be problems with the code that need to be fixed up or new exploits discovered, requiring more work.

As there is virtually zero chance any of these options could be done, the only thing I can think of is adding fees to play the game. Now the last thing I want to see is a monthly subscription. But there could be an initial charge of $3-5 to be able to access the game. If it was put on Steam we might be able to get an influx of players and Sony could earn some money. However, it would probably not be able to go on Steam until this hacking problem is fixed.

This would also likely make getting rid of the hackers easier assuming they must be logged on to cause any damage. If they hack you can easily ban their account. I’m assuming Infantry’s security is weak and whatever is being done now is not sufficient to ban a specific computer/IP. I take it these hackers easily work around it. I play another free online game and we have not had any hacking issues for many many years because we have a strong authentication system. At least with a charge to access the game, hackers accounts can be disabled and they would have to keep repurchasing the game over and over.

In addition there could be like a $1 charge for new aliases and maybe some kind of premium account. Like if you pay an extra $5 you have the power to make private arenas when others can’t, etc.

Van, what you are suggesting with the fees and priveledges, would also, require a programmer. Another fail.

I would like to see if sony ported it if they would also port it to other game SYSTEMS (yes they are your rivals but its just a game port. and you could still make some money from that just charge more for the other system ports)

    lol, i love you, tactical.

    there’s no way around that.

if there are duplicate aliases, it doesn’t matter if you tick a specific one. the ban always hits the players in the order of entry.

sounds to me like someone needs a refresherrrr. :]

This should be upgraded to a forum post….

If they make a premium account that skips the queue in pub CTF I’ll pay.

I don’t mind donating but I’m not sure we can raise enough cash to fund a programmer.

There should also be some kind of plan so we can spoon-feed the new dev.

I like the ideas of player donations and giving Satori/MP access to reboot after a crash.

Can we get a estimate on how much it’ll cost to have a programmer to do a patch? and is Sony willing to meet the players half way on the price? so if costs $2000 we will only need to raise $1000?

about time we get some ideas out here to fix this problem once and for all.

  20. Donkey Kong Says:
    January 24th, 2010 at 12:43 pm

The Question is : How much time do we have until Infantry gets released into the PlayStattion Network(PSN) ?

If its a long period of time infantry would be dead by then.

So we need to act fast if we want to save Infantry.

Subscriptions are out of the question, because it would decrease the population dramatically.

We need to make money while containing what we have left, which is population and dedication. If your dedicated to make donations to Infantry it is possible that there would be special privileges.

The only possible way of getting revenue is by donate on the combination of both League, Infantry, and even SOE forum sites.

Even if we don’t get high incomes it is still possible to reboot Infantry with the low amount of money gained.

AND if infantry goes to PSN it is likely to increase the revenue and population of the game, BUT it would have to recreate the 2D game system. IF this is possible it would likely take much time to remodel and reformat Infantry.

THE BEST WAY, i think , is to try to convince the players to play on the PC for a much better experience. THIS would be a bargain for the player since they would have to buy it to play it and it is free on the PC

Vanishing touched on a possible solution that should be explored: Most of the games my family, squaddies and friends play are available through Steam, which seems to be gaining momentum, while Infantry is…

Some of us subscribed to multiple accounts during p2p, for years. Is there a possibility of “reward” method subscriptions? It’s a possible middle-ground to required subs vs. contributions. Returning the game to freeplay simply seemed to have little impact on the population base, while a one-time fee (buy) is not a long-term solution.

During p2p, “guests” had limited options (although I believe they were TOO limited to promote the game). Rather than the “guest” handle, let players keep account names/aliases, while rewarding paying subscribers with added classes, much as we had it before (but again, more options should be available than in the past).

I guess I don’t have much faith that contributions will suffice, for the amount of development the game will continue to need.

  22. Donkey Kong Says:
    January 24th, 2010 at 2:08 pm

Steam is actually a great idea since it consists with shooting games mostly, and is widely known around the world.
While SOE is a bit lacky on world-wide service

If there is no contributions or income made, then this game is, without a doubt, sure to be lost in the haystack.

I already offered my programming skills to help, but all I get from the dick community is accusations of hacking and crashing the server. It seems like they WANT the game to die. All I want is to preserve it.

In any case, I got a copy of inf server code, so we’ll at least have a FI resurrection to fall back on when Sony finally flops.

I’d like to point something out… Infantry on PS3 would NOT succeed. They would basically have to rewrite it and it would be just another shooter, except you have to shoot them more to kill them due to armor. Coming from a PL point of view, Inf on PS3 wouldn’t work for several reasons, the main one would be lack of keys. Yeah you can easily fix that and make armors never shut off and shit but that removes the difficult aspects of this game. I would be UBER pissed if this game got converted to anything besides PC. There is no way there is any sort of console that would make the gaming experience what it is. I enjoy this game because it’s the fucking hardest game I’ve played. It isn’t newbie friendly and it’s extremely challenging. That is why I play it. I enjoy having to toggle my generator, while gizing + sging/ar’ing an nme and at the end of it, not having anything loading. I honestly can’t see this game being switched over to PS3, it would just be like playing cod4 except it takes more work to kill unless they add headshots and other bullshit. That’s my two cents.

  46. YourEscort1 Says:
    January 25th, 2010 at 7:51 am

I think a lot of ppl are right about some of those options. 1) P2P killed infantry in the first place do it again watch it fade for good. 2) If we have no programmer locally there isnt no way the community will be able to raise money back in forth to create easy access for the programmer. Which brings me to #3 if no programmer no PS3 version.

Donations sound like a great idea there a lot of dedicated players and a large enough community to get something going. The question is how to use the money. My suggestions would be take the money and lets get this game on some hardcore advertisement. Start hitting up major websites myspace, facebook, youtube, gaming websites, anywhere that has a large base population. On myspace it costs 25 cents for every click someone does on a banner. Now, I’m sure we won’t raise money for a programmer but we definantely can raise money for advertisement and get the community more involved by spreading by word of mouth. The only thing we need for advertisment is donations and an ill graphic designer to make this game look appealing, some well put together high definition videos wouldn’t hurt either.

As far as the hackers are concerned MP you should implement HIT and get you and Satori the permission to reboot the server so the community can start taking over.

  47. E.C.D.5 Says:
    January 25th, 2010 at 9:30 am

isnt there some way you can keep the game as is and move it to ps3 and just use the compatability of the usb ports to plug in a mouse and keyboard? or would that idea never take off?

  48. YourEscort1 Says:
    January 25th, 2010 at 9:57 am

ECD5 this game is so old I don’t think the ps3 console would even recognize the coding of the game. You would need a complete makeover to make it compatible.

  50. Sniper-Sniper3 Says:
    January 26th, 2010 at 7:26 am

I’m interested in the PS3 idea, but if it was to go on i don’t think Infantry would last a month on the PS systems, It’d be easier to make infantry FPS that’d make it easier and the population would grow, this HIT idea was a very good idea the only problem i see with it is finding decent players who can manage to the job.
Jeeeeeez someone sort this problem out I’d DIE if infantry was shut down.

Msg to SOE: If your going to shut Infantry down atleast give it to a company who gives a damn about it!
